Hosted and produced by CMFE – Community Media Forum Europe, the New Neighbours workshop will bring together fifteen editors and journalists from intercultural radio/TV programmes in community media to brainstorm and develop local, creative ideas to acquire new collaborators and extend audience engagement. The workshop will be led by experienced communication consultant and film-maker Ngalula Beatrice Kabutakapua, who co-foundend Balobeshayi, a social cooperative facilitating the integration of migrants in urban spaces.

CMFE delivered a presentation on Community media promoting local engagement across generations on May 24th in Belgrade, at the International Conference to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Council of Europe, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Serbia. The Conference focused on the implementation of Council of Europe instruments and standards in the field of media and information and host ed several members of the Council of Europe Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI), where CMFE has an observer status since 2008. On 23-26 May 2019, millions of citizens across the European Union will be electing a new European Parliament. And what a time for Europe it is! The entire European project and the values the Union is based upon are being challenged from all possible directions, both outside and inside. Its a fragile time for Europe and the outcome of the election is hard to predict. One thing is clear: advancing social justice, human rights, equality and inclusion will not get any easier.

Before the Presidential elections, the media reform which has been prepared for the past three years, had taken an important step forward with civil society’s claim for community media to be clearly highlighted in the reform process. Referring back to the first ever national community radio day held in December 2018, the press release of the ‘Media- and Civil society development NGOs’ suggested the establishment of a joint working group led by the State Committee on TV&Radio Broadcasting, with the representation of all the relevant experts, public servants and NGOs. Together this group should draft the new legislation framework on Audiovisual Media Services and meet the Action Plan of EU-UA Association Agreement. Continue reading
